Bad weather sweeps central and northern Italy, 2 people injured

After yesterday's torrential rain in Milan, bad weather swept through Florence, Turin, Genoa and the wider Naples area. Firefighters and civil protection were mobilized to help residents living on the ground floors and unable to evacuate.

In Milan, two workers were injured while trying to remove tree trunks and branches that had fallen onto the road due to strong winds. Firefighters' operations exceeded 500 and in one hour, it rained as much as -usually- in fifteen days.

Earlier, traffic was restored on the railway line connecting Milan to Bologna, where a train was struck by lightning last night. None of the passengers were injured. Outside Venice, police rescued a resident who, despite authorities' warnings of worsening weather conditions, had decided to go swimming in the sea and was unable to return to shore.

Italy seems divided: in many areas of the south, the heat wave continues to affect residents, with drought problems. On the contrary, in many central and northern areas, hailstorms that fell in recent hours have caused major damage, mainly to vineyards.

According to meteorologists' forecasts, new, heavy rainfall is expected in Genoa tonight, and tomorrow there may be downpours in 14 of the country's 20 regions.
