The BBC reports that in parallel with building this image, Russia experienced profound political changes. During his years in power, the Kremlin tightened control over state institutions, the media and the opposition, while power became increasingly concentrated in the hands of the president.
A key moment in this transformation was his return to the presidency in 2012. Following anti-government protests and mounting criticism, Putin appeared increasingly less accessible to the public and more focused on cultivating the image of an indispensable leader for Russia.
Today, at the age of 73, Putin remains the dominant figure in Russian politics. According to Russian journalist Mikhail Fishman, the war in Ukraine has become a central element of the political identity of the Russian president, who sees himself as the man who is determining the historical fate of his country.
From secret KGB agent to leader who has dominated the Russian political scene for more than a quarter of a century, Vladimir Putin's journey remains one of the most extraordinary political transformations of the modern era.
