"It won't be long"/ Trump: Iran's next supreme leader must

US President Donald Trump said Iran's next supreme leader "won't last long" without US approval, as Tehran prepares to announce the successor to slain leader Ali Khamenei.

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Iran's next supreme leader "won't last long" unless Tehran first gets his approval.

"He's going to have to get our approval," Trump told ABC News. "If he doesn't get our approval, it won't last long."

His comments came as the Iranian clerical body responsible for choosing the successor to slain supreme leader Ali Khamenei was reported to have voted and is expected to announce a name soon.

Earlier, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected the idea of US interference in the election of the country's next supreme leader.

"We don't allow anyone to interfere in our internal affairs. It's up to the Iranian people to choose their new leader," Abbas Araghchi told NBC's "Meet the Press." He added: "It's only the Iranian people's business and nobody else's."

Trump has been quoted as saying that "we want someone who will bring harmony and peace to Iran" and that he wants to be involved in the appointment, as was the case in Venezuela after US forces seized then-President Nicolás Maduro in January.
