"We are not worried"/ Russia gave Iran information/ Hegseth: Supreme Commander is aware of who is talking to whom
Since the war began on February 28, Russia has given Iran the locations of US military targets, including warships and aircraft, three anonymous officials told The Washington Post.
“It seems like a pretty comprehensive effort,” one of the sources told the newspaper.
Meanwhile, anonymous officials told the Associated Press that US intelligence has not found that Russia is instructing Iran on what to do with this information, while the US and Israel continue bombing and Iran launches retaliatory missiles at US targets and allies in the Persian Gulf.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the US was " not concerned" about these reports, also downplaying the possibility that Russia's assistance could endanger American citizens.
"The American people can rest assured that their commander-in-chief is fully aware of who is talking to whom," Hegseth said.
"And anything that shouldn't happen, whether publicly or in secret channels, is being confronted and confronted with force."
He added: “We are putting others at risk, and that is our job. So we are not worried about that. But the only ones who should be worried now are the Iranians who think they will survive.”
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt told reporters on Friday that " the report is clearly not making any change to military operations in Iran because we are completely destroying them."
Leavitt declined to say whether Donald Trump had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the issue or whether he believed Russia should face consequences, saying that would be explained by the president himself.
This is seen as the first sign that Moscow has sought to get involved in the war that the US and Israel launched against Iran a week ago.
When asked whether Russia would go beyond political support and offer military assistance to Iran, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there has been no such request from Tehran.
"We are in dialogue with the Iranian side, with representatives of the Iranian leadership, and we will undoubtedly continue this dialogue," he said on Friday.
Asked whether Moscow has provided any military or intelligence assistance to Tehran since the start of the war with Iran, he avoided answering.
Russia has strengthened ties with Iran, seeking missiles and drones needed for use in its four-year war against Ukraine. But the two countries have long maintained friendly relations, even though Tehran has endured years of isolation from the West over its nuclear program. /Al Jazeera/
