"I was not surprised by the decision to suspend talks," Merz on the failure of the US-Iran dialogue: It was predictable

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he was not surprised by the failure of talks between the United States and Iran, held last weekend in Islamabad.
Speaking in Berlin, Chancellor Merz said that from the beginning he did not have the impression that the negotiations were well prepared.
"I was not surprised by the decision to suspend the talks," he said, without giving details.
The German Chancellor warned that efforts to end the war launched on February 28 by the US and Israel will be long and difficult.
According to him, Germany is in constant contact with the parties involved in the conflict.
He stressed that the consequences of this war will be felt for a long time, even after it ends. “It will be a long-term process and we will continue to deal with its impacts,” Merz said.
On the economic front, he warned of significant pressures on the German economy and households. The government in Berlin is preparing for a prolonged period of hardship, aiming to maintain economic competitiveness and ease the burden on citizens.
However, Merz acknowledged the limitations; "We can't do everything. We can't solve every crisis in the world with Germany's money," he concluded.
