After two decades on the market, Microsoft has decided to shut down its Skype video calling application.

Skype "will no longer be available" to use starting May 5, the company confirmed on the "X" platform.

Skype's closure comes 14 years after Microsoft bought the service for $8.5 billion, marking the company's largest acquisition at the time, CNN writes.

Microsoft integrated the service into its other products, such as Office and its ill-fated Windows Phone mobile operating system.

Microsoft announces that users will have about 10 weeks to decide what to do with their accounts.

Skype's popularity has waned in recent years, despite other similar products like Zoom, Google Meet, and Cisco WebEx seeing a surge in usage.

Skype has also faced increased competition over the past decade from apps like Apple's FaceTime and Meta's WhatsApp.

Microsoft has also invested heavily in Teams, which offers the same but higher quality service.
