A tragic accident has claimed the lives of 22 athletes and officials in Nigeria. The accident occurred as the victims were returning from the country's National Sports Festival.
According to a statement issued by the government office, there were also injuries, but the exact number is not yet known. It is suspected that the driver's fatigue and high speed were the cause.
The athletes killed in the accident were returning home after "representing their country with honor," Nigeria's National Sports Commission (NSC) said in a statement posted on Instagram.
The 22nd Nigeria National Sports Festival was held in Ogun State in the southwest of the country, according to the NSC. After 11 days of activities, the competition held its closing ceremony on Thursday, the NSC said.
