His social media post was considered a threat to Trump, the former FBI director surrenders himself to authorities
James Comey is expected to surrender to US authorities, a day after charges were filed against him over a social media post that prosecutors said was "threatening" to US President Donald Trump.
Comey will appear at the Alexandria, Virginia, prosecutor's office, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The former FBI director claims he is innocent and will prove it in court. The prosecution marks another effort by the Justice Department during the Trump administration to target the president's political opponents through legal proceedings.
Last year, the US president himself mentioned Comey in a tweet, calling for criminal charges to be brought against his opponents.
The case is related to a post Comey made on Instagram last May. In one photo, seashells laid out in the sand formed the numbers “86 47.” The number “86” comes from restaurant industry slang and can mean “get rid of” someone, while the “47” could be interpreted as a reference to Trump, the 47th president of the United States.
According to the indictment approved by a grand jury in North Carolina, a "reasonable recipient" would interpret the message as a threat to Trump.
Comey deleted the post shortly afterwards, saying he considered it a political message and was unaware that these numbers were linked to violent actions.
The previous case against Comey during the Trump presidency, involving false statements to Congress, was dismissed by a federal judge.
