FIFA President, surprise guest at Egypt Gaza Summit! Infantino shakes hands with Trump

Among the heads of state and government attending the peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, one name stands out as an unexpected presence.

The surprise is FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The Swiss-Italian head of world soccer's governing body has cultivated a particularly close relationship with United States President Donald Trump in recent years.

During Trump's first term in office, in 2020, Infantino was invited to the White House for the signing ceremony of the Abraham Accords, which led to the normalization of relations between Israel and several Arab countries.

His presence there seemed to strengthen his relationship with the then-president, which seems to have lasted to this day.

In recent years, the FIFA president has come under pressure to use his position to help end the Israel-Hamas conflict. However, he has responded that “sport cannot solve geopolitical problems.” At the same time, there have been growing calls in Europe for Israeli teams to be excluded from international competitions.

This initiative failed when it was revealed that the Trump administration had intervened diplomatically to prevent Israel's ban from soccer, while also accelerating peace negotiations.

The president's "friend" and the Cup in the White House

Before receiving the invitation to the Sharm el-Sheikh summit, Infantino reportedly tried to lobby his friend Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. He even wrote in an Instagram post:

"President Donald J. Trump undoubtedly deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his decisive actions."

Few non-Americans have such close access to the American president or are so often at the White House. The World Cup trophy is already there, ahead of the 2026 World Cup, having been personally delivered by Infantino, who characteristically said:

"The trophy is only for winners... and since you're a winner, of course you can keep it."
