US approves $301 million missile sale to Italy

The US State Department has approved the sale to Italy of long-range air-to-surface missiles and related equipment, estimated to cost $301 million.
The US Agency for Security and Defense Cooperation has notified Congress of its approval.
The missiles are manufactured by Lockheed Martin.
The potential sale, according to a statement from the US State Department, "will support US foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a NATO ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe."
Furthermore, he emphasizes, "it will increase Italy's ability to face current and future threats by providing advanced long-range strike systems for use on Italian fighter aircraft, including, but not limited to, the F-35."
