It is not the first time that Turkish football has been involved in various scandals, mainly related to betting and its influence on the game of football, but it seems that this time the situation has taken on even greater proportions.

The Istanbul prosecutor's office has issued a series of arrest warrants for dozens of football players and officials in connection with the betting scandal that has rocked Turkey.

Among those arrested during the police raid on Friday morning were Fenerbahçe midfielder Mert Hakan Yandas and Galatasaray defender Metehan Baltaci.

According to the DHA news agency, former judge and commentator Ahmet Cakar and current judge Zorbay Kucuk were also arrested.

The Turkish Football Federation announced in October that it had launched an investigation into more than 150 referees over suspicions of betting on football matches, an investigation that quickly expanded to include players, officials and television commentators. The Istanbul prosecutor's office has issued arrest warrants for 46 suspects, 35 of whom were initially arrested, including the presidents of several clubs.

It is now expected to be learned what decision the Istanbul court will make, as if it finds these officials guilty, this would undoubtedly be the most serious blow in history for Turkish football.
