Flu epidemic breaks out badly in France, hospitals full

France is facing a growing flu epidemic, with health authorities warning that the situation could worsen significantly in the coming weeks, jeopardizing the normal functioning of hospitals, especially during the holiday season.

According to estimates by the Pasteur Institute and the French Public Health Service, the use of healthcare services for flu-related cases is expected to increase significantly in the next two weeks. Both institutions speak of a strong impact on hospitals, which are already feeling the pressure of the increasing influx of patients.

The Public Health Service's weekly bulletin, released Tuesday and covering the period December 8-14, shows that all flu-related indicators are increasing for all age groups. Of particular concern is the increase in emergency room visits for flu-like symptoms.

Authorities predict that this increase will continue for another two weeks, before a decline is noted in early 2026. This decrease is expected to be mainly related to the closure of schools and the reduction of contacts, which usually brings a slowdown in the transmission of the virus.

Meanwhile, health institutions are calling on citizens to exercise caution, follow medical recommendations, and avoid unnecessarily overloading hospital services.
