Explosion near US embassy in Oslo, Norwegian police do not rule out the possibility of terrorism

An explosion near the US Embassy in Oslo in the early hours of Sunday morning caused minor damage to the building, and Norwegian authorities are investigating whether the incident could be linked to a possible act of terrorism. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, according to police.
The explosion occurred at around 01:00 local time, immediately mobilizing a large number of police forces and emergency services in the area around the US Embassy in the Norwegian capital. Authorities said the area was temporarily cordoned off while security experts carried out detailed checks to determine the cause of the explosion and ensure there was no further risk.
Frode Larsen, head of the police's joint investigation and intelligence unit, told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK that one of the main leads in the investigation is the possibility that the explosion was an act of terrorism. However, he stressed that investigators are not yet certain and are also considering other possible scenarios. "One of the hypotheses is that it could be an act of terrorism, but we are not completely focused on this lead alone. The investigation is still in its early stages," Larsen said.
Norwegian police said the explosion occurred near the embassy's public entrance, in the consular section. According to Michael Dellemyr, who is leading the police operation at the scene, law enforcement has carried out extensive searches in the area around the embassy, which is located in the Morgedalsvegen district, about seven kilometers from the center of Oslo.
Authorities have also launched a public appeal for information, asking citizens who may have seen or heard anything suspicious during the night to contact police. Investigators hope that testimony from residents or footage from security cameras in the area can help in fully unraveling the incident.
Photos later posted on social media show damage to the building's entrance, including broken windows in the snow, cracks in the glass door and dark marks on the floor, near the area where the explosion is suspected to have occurred.
The US Embassy in Oslo confirmed that it was aware of the incident. A US State Department spokesman said that US authorities were working closely with Norwegian police to understand the circumstances of the incident and to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide condemned the incident, calling it “unacceptable”. He stressed that the security of diplomatic missions is a priority for Norwegian authorities and confirmed that he had been in contact with the US Embassy’s chargé d’affaires in Oslo, Eric Meyer.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing and police have not yet released details on any suspects or the exact nature of the explosion. Authorities are expected to release more information once they complete initial technical analysis and collect additional evidence from the scene.
