Rain, rain and only rain in Germany in recent weeks. Heavy rain is still expected on Sunday, the flood situation in southern Germany remains tense.

In Pfafenhofen in Ilm in Upper Bavaria a firefighter lost his life during a rescue operation. After days of heavy rain in many areas in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, rivers have burst their banks, flooding many areas in southern Germany.

Especially affected are some areas in Augsburg, Bamberg, Regensburg, Nuremberg. The rain is heavy, says the German Meteorological Service, and when this "comes with the saturated ground, then there can be rapid flooding again".

Two carriages of an ICE train derailed late Saturday due to a landslide – luckily no one was injured. 185 passengers were evacuated. Germany's Technical Aid Organization THW added 1,800 rescuers to southern Germany at the weekend. Even the German army has gone to some areas for help. 800 soldiers are helping in Pfafenhofen.

In many areas, the highest level of alert is in effect, while several German counties in the south declared a state of disaster in the meantime.

In many regions there is talk of the flood of the century, because the water level of the rivers is rising rapidly. Several areas in Augsburg were evacuated at the weekend. In Meckenbeuern on Saturday 1,300 people had to leave their homes due to the acute risk of flooding. Residents in the south of Germany have also been evacuated in other regions./ DW
