British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reacted to the shooting during the White House Correspondents' Association dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel, expressing shock at the event, which was also attended by US President Donald Trump.
In a post on social media, Starmer emphasizes that any attack on democratic institutions and press freedom must be strongly condemned.
"I am shocked by the scenes at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington last night. Any attack on democratic institutions or on press freedom must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. It is a great relief that the President, the First Lady and all those present are safe," he said.
The incident occurred during the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, shortly after the event had begun. According to reports, a loud noise was heard at the entrance to the hall, causing panic among those present.
Guests lay on the floor, while President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were immediately escorted away by security forces. Secret Service agents entered the hall armed with guns and ordered the evacuation of attendees, including journalists, officials and various dignitaries.
The suspected perpetrator was arrested at the scene, while investigations to fully unravel the incident continue.
