Trump: Britain would fight for the US, I don't know about the EU

US President Donald Trump has said he believes the United Kingdom would support the US in the event of war, but has expressed serious doubts about the willingness of European Union countries to do the same. These statements, he said, also influenced his decision not to sign a trade deal with the European bloc, Reuters reports.
“One of the problems with NATO is that we have to fight for them, but will they fight for us if a war breaks out? I’m not sure I can say, but I will say this: I believe the United Kingdom would fight alongside us,” Trump said. “I think they would be with us. I’m not sure about a lot of other countries,” he added.
According to the American president, this conviction has led to Britain benefiting from some exemptions from trade tariffs imposed by his administration, while the European Union has faced threats to impose tariffs of up to 30% on goods exported to the US.
"That's why I made a deal with them. I didn't make a deal with the European Union. I made some other deals, but with your competitors, with the EU, I didn't do anything," Trump said.
NATO has only invoked Article 5 of its founding treaty, which considers an attack on one member as an attack on all, once to date. This article was invoked in support of the US after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
The United Kingdom has been one of the United States' closest allies, contributing troops to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. However, the capabilities of the British military have been significantly reduced in recent years.
