Severe frost wave sweeps across Italy and Europe

Europe is experiencing a severe frost wave, which, although not reaching the extremely low temperatures recorded yesterday in Naruska Hall in Finnish Lapland (-42.3°C), has also brought severe cold to Italy: -23.1°C on the Asiago Plateau and -9.3°C in Prato .
Corriere della Sera writes that this wave of frost has mainly affected the northeastern areas of the continent, also extending to northern Italy, while in Sicily the highest peaks of the Madonie are covered in snow.
According to meteorologists, current temperatures are around 15 degrees below the seasonal average, while the peak of the cold is expected during the night between Sunday and Monday. Forecasts speak of " arctic " minimum temperatures in many alpine and northern areas of Italy, with values that in some cases drop to -25°C.
A bitter cold is also being recorded in the Po Valley , as well as in parts of Tuscany , Umbria and the central Apennines , where the thermometer has dropped several degrees below zero. The cold weather extends as far as Calabria , where negative temperatures have been recorded.
Meteorologists describe this situation as a very rare event for the 21st century, highlighting the strong contrast with the month of December, which in some cities, such as Milan , was the warmest ever recorded.
"Thursday's severe frost can be classified as an 'extremely rare cold event in the 21st century'," emphasizes Lorenzo Tedici, meteorologist at iLMeteo.it .
Due to the weather conditions, the Italian Civil Protection has declared a yellow alert in five regions: Umbria , Abruzzo , Lazio, Calabria and coastal Campania . Authorities are warning of a typically wintry weekend and start of the week, with very low temperatures, although the frost phase is only expected to last a few more days.
By the middle of next week, the meteorological situation is expected to change, as a broad Atlantic system will bring rain and snow, as well as a slight increase in temperatures, especially during the day. Heavy rain and heavy snow are expected in the Alps, even at relatively low altitudes.
Meanwhile, severe weather has also hit Western Europe hard, with strong storms bringing winds of over 200 km/h, power outages and numerous flight cancellations. Some places have recorded record low temperatures and heavy snowfall.
According to European satellite data, around 80% of the continent is currently covered in snow, the highest figure recorded since 2010, confirming the extraordinary dimensions of this frost wave in Europe.
