VOA: North Macedonia is expected to have an Albanian prime minister for the first time

Macedonian Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski and Speaker of the Parliament, Talat Xhaferi resigned from their posts today to pave the way for the formation of the technical interim government. For the first time in North Macedonia, the government is expected to be led by an Albanian, and this will be Mr. Talat Xhaferi of the Democratic Union for Integration. The technical government is expected to be approved on Sunday until midnight.
Dimitar Kovačevski submitted his resignation from the office of the prime minister to the services of the parliament, thus respecting the law that requires the formation of the technical government one hundred days before the elections. With his resignation, the entire government is leaving, but almost all the ministers of the Social Democratic League, the Democratic Union for Integration and the Alliance for Albanians remain the same who will continue their duties in the technical government.
The opposition VMRO-DPMNE will take part in the temporary technical government with two ministers and three deputy ministers who, according to the constitution, are known as "complementary deputy ministers".
Outgoing Prime Minister Kovacevski hopes to win the May 8 parliamentary elections and once again take the post of head of government. He said that it was an honor, pride and responsibility for him to lead the Government of North Macedonia, while he emphasized the need for the state to maintain its strategic path, which is the pro-Western orientation and partnership with the USA, and for the technical government "to take care of the citizens , like during the past two years".
"I had the responsibility to lead the government during an extraordinary period of international turbulence, but first of all economic turbulence caused by the war in Ukraine", said Mr. Kovacevski, assessing that his government has successfully managed to overcome these challenges
Talat Xhaferi, the current speaker of the Parliament, will be at the head of the technical government. In this way, North Macedonia will have an Albanian prime minister for the first time, albeit with a temporary mandate of 100 days.
According to the agreement between the two partners of the governing coalition, SDSM and DUI, Jovan Mitrevski, who is the leader of the group of social-democratic deputies, will take the place of the speaker of the parliament. Meanwhile, Artan Grubi will leave the position of the first Deputy Prime Minister to Bojan Mariçiçi, who is in charge of European integration issues. Mr. Grubi remains the Deputy Prime Minister for Political System and Community Relations.
The opposition VMRO takes over the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and has proposed Pançe Toshkovski and the Ministry of Social Affairs with Gjoko Vellkovski as its head. The Macedonian opposition also has three deputy ministers (supplementary): in the Ministry of Finance, Information Society and Agriculture.
Mr. Xhaferi, meanwhile, after resigning, is expected to notify the president of the country, Stevo Pendarovski, who must hand over the mandate for the formation of the technical government:
"On January 27, the mandate holder must submit to the Parliament the proposal-program and proposal-composition of the (technical) government, and with this the way is opened on January 28, which coincides with the 100th day before the election day , to elect the government", said Talat Xhaferi, outgoing Speaker of the Parliament of North Macedonia.
The opposition VMRO has warned that it will not vote for Mr. Talat Xhaferi as prime minister, something that could lead to further complications, with the DUI also not voting for VMRO members in the cabinet. government, the Social-Democratic League would act in the same way, as announced by its chairman, Kovacevski.
VMRO calls the resignations "the beginning of the end of the Social Democratic League and DUI".
The procedures for the nomination of the technical government must be completed by midnight on Sunday, January 28. This will be the third technical government that comes out as a commitment from the Agreement known as "Përzhina", reached in 2015, which was made due to the removal of dilemmas from the possibility of manipulation of elections, with the appointment of exponents of the opposition in the government cabinet./ VOA
