Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed in Libya.

Ahmed Khalifa, an Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent in Libya, said on Tuesday that Gaddafi had been shot and killed in the western Libyan town of Zintan, where he had been based for the past decade.

The 53-year-old's killing was confirmed by his political advisor, Abdullah Othman, but the attackers and circumstances of the killing are still unknown.

Aif al-Islam Gaddafi never held an official position in Libya, but was considered his father's number two from 2000 to 2011.

This was the year the Libyan opposition killed Muammar Gaddafi, toppling his regime.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was initially imprisoned in Zintan in 2011, before being released in 2017.
