Will I get dementia like my father? I took a test to find out

By Sharon Walker - The Telegraph

If you had the chance to take a test that showed your risk of dementia, would you do it? Recently, the NHS has started using blood tests that measure proteins such as tau and amyloid, which can detect early signs of the disease, long before symptoms appear. These tests are now also available in private clinics.

Although I don't have serious memory problems, I am very vulnerable to the risk of dementia, as my father was affected by dementia with Lewy bodies. It was hard to accept that such a bright and energetic man would end up confused, hallucinating, and unable to take care of himself. Within a short time, the disease completely destroyed him.

Why was my father affected, and will I be next?
The causes of dementia are not always genetic. It is also linked to inflammation, toxins, and other lifestyle factors. While treatments remain limited, prevention is currently the most powerful tool we have.

For this reason, I decided to have a test that measures tau proteins in the blood. The idea was not to be afraid, but to be able to act early and understand if there was something I could change.

The test results
showed that I am not currently at risk for Alzheimer's and that my brain shows no signs of inflammation or nerve damage. This was a huge relief, although I know there are no guarantees for the future, according to dritare.net

What am I doing to reduce my risk?
After this assessment, I have made some concrete changes: I exercise regularly, take omega-3s and vitamin D, pay more attention to sleep, and am reducing my exposure to toxins in my daily life. I am also working to better manage my stress.

Key tips for brain health
-Reducing stress through yoga and mental calm
-Mediterranean diet with olive oil and green vegetables
-Limiting sugar
-Regular physical activity, including strength exercises
-Supplementation with omega-3 and vitamin D
-Regular and quality sleep
-Reducing toxins and taking care of oral health
A good result today does not exclude future risks, but knowing and acting gives you the feeling that you are doing everything you can to protect your brain.
