Zelensky gives the "Hero of Ukraine" award to the former army chief

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has named former army chief General Valeriy Zaluzhny a "Hero of Ukraine" a day after he was replaced.

The decision to award Zaluzhny Ukraine's highest state award was announced in a decree on the president's website and comes after the popular figure, who oversaw Ukraine's war effort throughout the Russian occupation, was replaced by Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi.

The military changes followed months of speculation about a rift between Ukraine's two most prominent wartime figures over their visions for the war against Russia.

Polls have shown that Zaluzhny has a larger share of public trust than the Ukrainian leader.
