Zelensky: Ukraine ready for elections, internationals should provide security

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the country is ready for elections if international partners guarantee security.
The elections have been suspended since the imposition of martial law, following the full-scale Russian offensive in February 2022. He said he would seek proposals for legal changes to enable the vote.
The elections could be held within 60 to 90 days with the help of the US and its allies. Zelensky stressed that the decision on the elections belongs solely to the Ukrainian people.
He called the claim that he is using the war to stay in power absurd. The Ukrainian president won the 2019 election with over 73% of the vote, the BBC reports.
The opposition and experts say elections during wartime are inherently risky. Some 5.7 million Ukrainians live abroad because of the conflict.
Public opinion does not support elections during the war, only 10% are in favor. Zelensky remains the most popular politician in the country. He is working with the US and European partners on a 20-point peace document. International discussions on a ceasefire and Ukraine's security continue intensively.
