Massive fire in Chios, Greece declares state of emergency

The tourist island of Chios in Greece has been facing a powerful wave of fires for three days, which have engulfed large areas of land and forests, forcing authorities to declare a state of emergency.
According to Greek authorities, over 440 firefighters with 85 vehicles and 13 helicopters and planes are engaged in the operation to extinguish the flames, supported by additional assistance from Athens, Thessaloniki and the island of Lesbos.
The Minister of Civil Protection and Climate Crisis, Giannis Kefalogiannis, stated that there are serious suspicions of deliberate arson, emphasizing that the fires have spread to different and unrelated areas.
"We are increasing police presence and military patrols in Chios to ensure security and investigate the origin of the fires," the minister said.
At the moment, there are no reports of casualties, but material damage is extensive, while some residents have been evacuated as a precaution. Authorities continue to appeal for vigilance and cooperation with emergency services.
