The island of Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island, is the first country in the world to enter the year 2026. The country is part of Kiribati, a Pacific Ocean nation located south of Hawaii and northeast of Australia. Kiribati, made up of several atolls, became independent from the United Kingdom in 1979 and has a population of about 116,000. Most of the atolls are very low-lying and are at risk from rising sea levels due to global warming.
Other parts of Kiribati will welcome the New Year in the coming hours, marking the start of celebrations in the region.
Fireworks are a universal way to celebrate the new year, from Sydney Harbour in Australia to Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In Denmark, a special tradition is to break plates on the doorsteps of friends' homes for good luck over the next 12 months.
