Election date 2027/ President Begaj meeting with Balla, opposition boycotts in

The Chairman of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, Taulant Balla, met with President Bajram Begaj at the Brigades Palace, within the framework of consultations on setting the date for the 2027 local elections.

Meanwhile, the consultation process is taking place in a tense political climate, as the Democratic Party and other opposition forces have rejected the head of state's invitation. The opposition has made it clear that it will not be part of the discussions on setting the election date, questioning the development of this process in the current circumstances.

The head of the DP Parliamentary Group, Gazment Bardhi, has described the president's initiative as a theater, while the Freedom Party has also confirmed its non-participation in the consultations.

On the other hand, Tedi Blushi has argued that the current situation cannot be treated as normal, at a time when students are on the streets protesting for their demands. According to him, consultations on the electoral calendar cannot be held as if the country were not facing concerns.

Under these conditions, the round table convened by Begaj is continuing without opposition representation, while discussions on the election date are taking place in an atmosphere of political clashes and student protests, reports journalist Ergys Gjençaj.

According to the provisions of the Electoral Code, the 2027 local elections must be held on a Sunday, between April 15 and May 15. The President must announce the date in accordance with legal deadlines, while November 6 is considered the deadline for issuing the decree.

So far, there is no official joint proposal from the political parties for the date of the elections. May remains the most likely period, while May 2 is excluded because it coincides with Orthodox Easter.

One of the dates mentioned as an alternative is May 9, which also coincides with Europe Day.

Beyond the electoral calendar, the opposition's refusal to engage in consultations and student protests make the climate in which this process is taking place even more tense.
