In Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," the old man Ebenezer Scrooge is confronted by three spirits who show him the past, present, and future, at moments when he himself has chosen greed over people, money over love, ego over relationships, in order to force him to understand that the problem is not others, but himself.
And when you read Sali Berisha's new attacks on Lulzim Basha from Foltorja 2.0, in this festive climate, it is impossible not to see this story as a political version of Dickens's tone, but without the happy ending.
Berisha has returned to Basha today with the same vocabulary, the same logic, the same obsession. But there is one detail that Berisha never touches on: between the first speech and the speech 2.0, he himself has not kept any of the promises he made to the Democrats.
The unification of the DP was promised; today there are more pieces than ever. Opening and primaries were promised; today decision-making is more focused on one person than ever. Victory over Rama was promised, but comparing the 2021 result with the result of the returned Berisha is a big and dark hole that blackens the author of the pledges. A sovereignist party was promised that "would not ask about internationals", but today they are all eyes and ears from the partners, just as they were when the party was united, waiting for a deus ex machina that his presence makes impossible. A moral uplift was promised in the face of Rama's corruption, but, to remain only in public acts, upon his return, he joined the Socialists in votes to make a flawed electoral code that granted mandates to Rama; he made a criminal amnesty against the corrupt that undermined the work of SPAK; he made Albanians fish with a People's Advocate signed by his deputies and voted for by Rama, in a disgusting show that presented them before public opinion as both incompetent and implicated in Rama's dirty game.
With the eyes of the Ghost of Christmas Past, as in Dickens, Berisha is not facing his failures, but is recycling the same internal enemy to avoid facing his commitments. Trying to rewrite history and find other alibis, when in fact he should respect his commitments in light of the article he wrote with his own hand as a guarantee of change, the "Basha article".
For this reason, the attack on Basha today is a political survival mechanism, because both the first and second speeches, which are turning into a farce, were built on false premises.
Berisha nuk e nisi betejën për të “shpëtuar” PD-në në 2021, por për të mbrojtur veten pas sanksionimit amerikan, që vijon të jetë aty, pavarësisht shumave marramendëse në lobim. Dhe, për të luftuar për mbijetesën e tij personale, ai u tregua i gatshëm ta shqyejë PD-në, duke sulmuar me çdo mjet partinë. Qysh në nisje të saj, ai relativizoi atë që vetë e quante “masakra zgjedhore e 25 prillit 2021”, duke i dhënë alibi Ramës përballë shqiptarëve dhe ndërkombëtarëve, kur deklaronte për të armiqësuar demokratët, se zgjedhjet nuk u vodhën nga Rama, por u humbën nga Basha. E ndonëse sot thotë të kundërtën për ato zgjedhje, dëmi që u bë nga retorika dhe aksioni i tij personal është fatal, pasi jo vetëm e legjitimoi Ramën atëbotë, por i dha socialistit mjetet për të penguar Komisionin Hetimor që u ngrit me mbështetje ndërkombëtare mbi kërkesën e PD-së për të zbardhur krimet zgjedhore.
Gjithmonë për interesat e tij, shpiku lloj-lloj akuzash ndaj Bashës vetëm sepse ky e pezulloi nga grupi parlamentar, në mënyrë që Berisha t’i dilte zot premtimit të tij për të mbajtur të ndarë aksionin e PD-së nga ai personal për mbrojtjen nga non grata. I sigurt që do ta fuste PD-në në përçarje dhe në përballje me SHBA-të, Berisha vijoi gjithsesi përplasjen e brendshme, duke e kthyer një parti që u nda me 30 mijë vota nga PS në 2021, në një parti të vogël dhe personale, të lidhur ngushtësisht me mbijetesën e liderit të saj, e cila e sheh me dylbi rezultatin e PD-së nën drejtimin e Bashës në 2021.
Ndaj, kur deklaron sot se “Basha u mor me mua e jo me zgjedhjet”, Berisha jo vetëm nuk thotë të vërtetën, por po përpiqet të mbulojë gjurmët e tij në shkalafitjen që i shkaktoi PD-së, duke e telendisur urbi et orbi me skena që nuk do të shlyhen dot kurrë nga kujtesa e publikut. Të gjitha të shmangshme, nëse ai do të kishte bërë një akt prej lideri në shtatorin e vitit 2021, duke thënë vetëm këto fjalë:
“Unë po respektoj zotimin tim për të mos e vendosur PD-në në një konflikt të hapur me partnerët perëndimorë; do të vazhdoj betejën time për heqjen e sanksioneve në rrugë personale dhe do të jem në mbështetje të demokratëve, ashtu siç ata më kanë mbështetur mua për tre dekada, duke më bërë President dhe Kryeministër.”
E nëse Shpirti i Krishtlindjes, i lindur nga pena e Dickens-it, do të na ndihmonte të shihnim këtë univers paralel, ku Berisha është vetëm i pezulluar nga grupi parlamentar i PD-së, por pjesë e strukturave të saj të larta, jo vetëm që PD nuk do të ishte e përçarë, por do të ishte në pushtet. E lirë të merrej me korrupsionin e Ramës, e lirë të mbante kryeministrin përgjegjës, e lirë të kërkonte mbështetjen e partnerëve ndërkombëtarë, e lirë për të fituar përballë një qeverie të diskredituar brenda dhe jashtë vendit.
But, unlike Dickens' character, who is saved because he agrees to change, when he sees the wrong choices and the terrible selfishness, he finally says: "I was wrong, I must change my path", Berisha, on the contrary, having already seen the "ghosts" of the past, the losses, the broken promises, the division, the fatigue of the democrats, chooses not to change anything. He only revives the old conflict with Basha.
For the democrats and opposition parties seeking a way out, this is the real tragedy, because Pulpit 2.0 brings only a tired narrative of revenge, while the government is mired in its own corruption.
If there is a Dickensian moral to this story, it is easily understood, Berisha can continue to produce new speeches, accusations and ghosts, but without a sincere moment of self-reflection, without a “yes, I was wrong, I became your obstacle because of my selfishness”, this opposition will remain stuck in the past. And the political Christmas that the Democrats are waiting for, never comes.
