United States President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he is not yet ready to reach an agreement to end the war with Iran, although according to him the other side seems interested in negotiations.
In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump said the current terms are not enough for a deal. He did not specify what Washington's exact demands are, but stressed that Iran's complete abandonment of its nuclear ambitions would be one of them.
The US president also announced that the US is working with other countries on a security plan for the Strait of Hormuz, while international oil prices have increased significantly. He downplayed the concerns of American citizens about the increase in fuel prices, saying that the situation is under control.
According to Trump, US and Israeli forces have neutralized most of Iran's missiles and drones and Tehran's military capabilities could be completely destroyed within two days.
He also confirmed that US forces had struck Kharg Island, home to a key Iranian oil terminal. He said the energy infrastructure was not completely destroyed to avoid damage that would take years to repair. "We could hit it a few more times, just for fun," he said.
Trump also raised doubts about the health of Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen in public since taking office following the death of his father. "I've heard he may not be alive. If he is, he should do something smart for his country and surrender," the US president said.
In the interview, Trump also criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying it is harder to reach a deal with him than with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The comments come as the US has eased some sanctions on Russian oil to keep energy prices low.
Meanwhile, according to US authorities, 13 American soldiers have lost their lives since the start of the conflict, including six people killed on Friday in a military plane crash in Iraq.
