Euro falls to historic low/ The European currency drops to 94.5 lekë, experts call for de-euroization

The European currency is facing another wave of weakening in the Albanian market. Under the influence of high foreign exchange inflows and the increase in the supply of the euro, the exchange rate has dropped to record levels, making the lek even stronger against the European currency.
According to the official exchange rate published by the Bank of Albania, one euro is exchanged for 94.89 lekë, while in the foreign exchange market its value has fallen further, trading at around 94.5 lekë. Economic experts link this depreciation to the flow of foreign tourists, remittances, as well as developments in the real estate market.
To mitigate fluctuations in the foreign exchange market and strengthen the country's foreign exchange reserves, the Bank of Albania has continued its interventions through the purchase of euros. According to the published calendar, during 2026 the institution expects to withdraw between 330 and 450 million euros from the market.
These interventions have contributed to the increase in foreign exchange reserves, which have currently exceeded the level of 7.5 billion euros. The majority of these reserves are held in euros, followed by the US dollar and the British pound.
But to stabilize the exchange rate in Albania, economic experts suggest putting into operation the de-euroization policy, especially during the summer season. According to experts' forecasts, the euro may continue to decline in the coming weeks, reaching levels even lower than 94 lek at the peak of the summer season.
