SPAK uncovers the scheme: How Isa Aliu laundered drug lords' money through a construction company

New details from the SPAK investigation reveal the mechanism allegedly used by Isa Aliu to launder profits derived from international cocaine trafficking.

According to the investigative file, a significant portion of the money obtained from criminal activity was initially transferred to Albania in cash, bypassing the banking system. The funds were then invested in real estate and commercial companies in various sectors, mainly in construction, hospitality and services.

SPAK says that after injecting large sums of money into the company “A.. R.. H…” sh.pk, Isa Aliu is suspected of directing its activity towards the construction sector. According to investigators, the company initially appeared as a subcontractor in residential projects, with the aim of creating a legal facade for the circulation of funds and justifying future investments.

Preliminary investigations have also uncovered a suspected scheme of fictitious purchase of shares in various companies at prices much lower than the real value. Through this method, according to SPAK, control of commercial entities was ensured at minimal cost, while the money circulated through loans between individuals and related companies, creating an artificial economic history and losing traces of their criminal origin.

According to prosecutors, the ultimate goal of this scheme was to integrate drug trafficking money into the formal economy, through investments in construction, hotels, properties and other business activities.

During the years 2019-2021, the group that Isa Aliu is part of operated in Latin America, Brazil, Belgium and the Netherlands. The investigations conducted have raised suspicions that the suspects trafficked at least 50 tons of cocaine during the above period.

Arrest warrants have also been issued for Nikoll Bibaj, Sokol Bibaj, Florjan Musaj, Armando Pacani, Denis Matoshi, Naldi Yzeiraj, Oklid Aliu, Dritan Gjika and Shpëtim Aliu.
