Factories have cut the number of employees, the crisis from the fall of the euro

Caught in a multifaceted crisis by the collapse of the euro and foreign demand, clothing and footwear factories have cut nearly a fifth of their jobs last year.

According to official INSTAT data in short-term statistics in the last quarter of 2024, the employment index in textile factories decreased by over 19% points compared to the same period in 2023, while in shoe manufacturing factories the employment index in the same comparison period fell by over 7% points.

Economic data on enterprises reported by INSTAT show that in 2023 the average number of salaried employees in clothing factories was 28,250, while in footwear factories it was 20,080.

Market sources claim that the reduction in employees continued in January-February 2025, as many factories terminated annual contracts and also ended their activities.

The reduction of employees in clothing factories entered its third year in 2025. The decline in the value of the euro from 122.4 lek in 2021 to less than 100 lek last year caused large losses.

The sector also faced a sharp decline in demand in export markets as a result of the transfer of production outside Europe and reduced consumer demand for clothing and footwear in developed countries.

The latest data shows that in February of this year there is an improvement in orders for shoes, but for clothing the situation is a little more fragile. The return of activity for shoe factories is becoming difficult because employees have already been integrated into other sectors and are finding it difficult to return to the factories.

The "Made in Albania" clothing and footwear production sector was devastated by the battle with the euro and the decline in demand and is now finding it difficult to respond to new orders.

Factory workers who are losing their jobs have mostly been reintegrated into the service sector, especially in cleaning. Increased demand from hotels and Airbnb units has increased the demand for cleaning workers.

The labor market was restructured, shifting from manufacturing to services, but almost all sectors, except industry, are suffering from a shortage of workers.

Employment indices last year have seen strong growth in computer software, travel agencies, hotels, information and communication, etc./Monitor
