Albanians no longer prefer to work as "freelancers", report: The largest decline in the region of online workers during 2025

Albania is facing a significant contraction of employees on online platforms, etc.

According to the latest regional report "Gigmetar" for 2025, Albania is the country with the largest decline in the number of freelance workers (free online professionals) on platforms such as Upwork, Freelance, Guru, etc., out of all countries in the Southeastern European Region.

While the region as a whole has experienced a slight contraction of 0.7% from July 2024 to May 2025, Albania records the largest decline of 5.3% in the total number of active workers on major platforms.

This trend is particularly noticeable on the Upwork platform, where the number of Albanians engaged decreased by 7.5%, and on Freelancer, where unlike other countries in the region that experienced growth, Albania recorded a decrease of 1%.

The report highlights another Albania has the least active freelancer population in the region, with only 28.2% of workers actually engaged with projects, compared to North Macedonia which leads with over 40%.

The report's experts suggest that the decline is coming from uncertainty in the global technology sector and the effects of the rise of Artificial Intelligence, which is changing the demand for services.

However, in the case of Albania, factors such as youth migration and the lack of specified digital skills are key causes that are discouraging young workers from entering or remaining in this market.

Data from Gigmetar shows that in 2025, 4,108 Albanians are working on platforms, with a 5.3 percent contraction from 2024.

Despite the decline, Upwork remains the leading platform for Albanians, holding 68.2% of the domestic market. The biggest decline comes from software development and creative design professions.

While Albania is abandoning work on platforms that flourished during the pandemic, countries like Romania and Hungary have seen stability or slight growth.
