Laylat al-Qadr, what you need to know about the day when fasting is worth 1,000

Today is Laylat al-Qadr, and according to Islam, fasting on this day is considered to be worth a thousand months. Laylat al-Qadr marks the descent of the Quran to Earth and the beginning of the writing of the holy book.

According to religious preachers, fasting and praying to God Almighty on this day determine a person's fate and life for a year. Many people, even non-Muslims, join the millions of Muslim fasting people around the world. It is enough to honor this night that Allah Almighty has dedicated a whole chapter with this name in the Quran, called Suratul Qadr.

The first verses that were revealed on this glorious Night were about reading and knowledge, which clearly shows the high determination of the Islamic religion in the education, training and upbringing of the individual and society in general.

We sent it down (the Quran) on the night of Qadr. And what will make you know what the night of Qadr is? The night of Qadr is better than a thousand months! The angels and the Spirit (Jibreel) descend therein by the permission of their Lord with every matter. That (which God decrees) is peace until the break of dawn.” (Al-Qadr, 1-5).

Almighty God revealed to Muhammad the first verses of the Glorious Quran while he was standing in the cave of Hira, which was located on the outskirts of blessed Mecca.

The first verses that were revealed on this glorious night were about reading and knowledge, an imperative that clearly shows the high determination of the Islamic religion in the education, training, and upbringing of the individual and society in general.

The message of these verses of the Glorious Quran was addressed to Muhammad (peace be upon him), but this message was universal and concerned the inhabitants of Mecca as well as all of humanity, because it was no coincidence that Allah (swt) sent Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a mercy for all of humanity.

This night is more valuable than a thousand months that we count in our daily lives, a period which if calculated would be equal to a lifetime in this world.

On this glorious night, by the command of God Almighty, the Angels and Gabriel descend with prayers among the believers to see their condition and situation, therefore this night represents peace, salvation, and comfort until the dawn of the morning.

Why is it called "Night of Power"?

The word "Qadr" means honor or respect, because it is a night that is honored and has a special position with Allah because of its characteristics. Likewise, the believer who stays awake, performing worship of Allah during this night, is endowed with a special honor.

The other meaning of this word is tribulation, as on this great night the world is tribulation by the large number of angels who descend on this night.” Qadr also means Qadr (predestination), because on this night it is predetermined what will happen for the following year.

What happens on this night?

On this night, the fate of all creatures for the following year is decided. On this night, it is determined who will live and who will die, who will be honored and who will be cursed, who will be destined for Paradise and who will be destined for Hell. It is determined where drought and famine will occur, it is determined who will perform Hajj that year and who will not, it is determined what will happen until the next year, etc.

How should Muslims spend the Night of Power?

Considering that we are in the holy month of Ramadan, and especially in the last part, which is crowned with forgiveness and salvation of believers from the fire of hell, on this night we should be more dedicated to prayer, repentance and istighfar, as much as possible to remember God with dhikr, to send blessings upon Muhammad (peace be upon him), to help family, the poor and the needy with charity, to protect our limbs from sins and evil deeds, to read the Quran and pray as much as possible in congregation in mosques, as well as to pray as much as possible at night in our homes.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) says in a Hadith:

Whoever stands (in prayer) on the Night of Power, out of faith and in expectation of (God's reward), his past sins will be forgiven.
