British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump to discuss the current situation in the Middle East.

According to a statement from a 10 Downing Street spokesman, the two leaders discussed the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to end the disruption to global shipping, which is leading to rising costs worldwide.

"The prime minister also expressed his condolences to the American president for the American soldiers who lost their lives during the conflict," the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, Starmer also held a conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, where they discussed the impact that the continued closure of the strait is having on international maritime transport.

The two leaders agreed to continue consultations on the war in the Middle East in a meeting expected to take place on Monday.
