Witches turned into cats! The reasons why they are related to black magic and

Cats are, as we often describe them, mysterious creatures.

They have a different vibe from other animals. They are unpredictable, loving, lonely, curious, exciting, sometimes even shy. And they often retain their wild character. Cats are not easy to tame and this is something that many people like. On the other hand, this characteristic is also what makes them repulsive to others.

This interesting and mysterious character of theirs is also the reason that people in the past have associated them with magic and various superstitions. In fact, it was believed that cats – especially black cats – were not only the favorite pets of witches, but could also bring bad luck.

But why do witches like to have cats? And why did people end up associating with them? The reasons that have established the cat as the ideal companion of witches go back in time.

Mythology and history

In various cultures, cats were associated with gods and creatures that had supernatural powers and were associated with magic and death. In Norse mythology, the most mysterious goddess with magical abilities was Freyja. Freyja drove a cart pulled by eight cats. She was the queen of the elves, whom the Giants tried to kidnap from the gods.

The first witch cat to make headlines (in a 16th century newspaper) was a white-spotted cat named Satan.

In the Middle Ages, cats were hunted and exterminated by people who believed they were symbols of witchcraft or were witches themselves who had turned into cats. Especially at the time when witches were punished and burned at the stake, many believed that cats were the spirits of witches and that in this form witches followed them everywhere.

It is also said that cats were used in different rituals by witches. These cats were used as part of magical spells and rituals and thus became associated with black magic. This belief was reinforced by the church, which began to consider cats as symbols of evil.

Patrons and relatives of witches

Cats were considered guardians of witches, as people believed they were able to detect the presence of spirits. This belief also contributed to the association between cats and witches.

Cats also tend to be nocturnal animals that are most active at night. This made them seem even more mysterious, as their behavior was consistent with the idea of magic that was believed to occur at night.

Another reason that made cats, and especially black cats, associated with occult powers is their glowing eyes. Cats' eyes, especially in the dark, can shine brightly because of a reflective layer behind the retina. This was often interpreted as a sign of their connection to the supernatural.

To the Jews now and to the Babylonian civilization, these animals were associated with evil (as were snakes) and were even suspected of being direct relatives of witches. Therefore, in many countries, the black cat is considered bad luck.

Cats and witches look a lot alike!

Cats are interesting animals. They are quiet, agile, independent and have a unique character. Therefore, they are unconsciously associated with witches, to whom the same characteristics have always been attributed.

Witches transformed into black cats

In Celtic mythology, it is believed that black cats were actually people who committed evil deeds and were forced to return to the world. These beliefs eventually lead to the superstitions people have about black cats today.

A witch, too, had to have a black cat as an assistant, as a co-worker, present at all times. This is related to the belief that a powerful (perhaps human) spirit resides in the cat and can therefore curse the enemies of a witch.

Such beliefs led people to invent countless stories of witches turning into cats, which over time became more satanic. The alleged witnesses to these stories claimed that they entered the homes of people they wanted to harm at night.

Finally, some peoples believed that some witches had the ability to turn into a black cat nine times, hence the expression that cats have nine lives.
