Benik Hallaçi is known as its discoverer and then Prof. As. Dr. Lulëzim Shuka, lecturer of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Tirana with Prof. Kit Tan, lecturer at the Institute of Biology at the University of Copenhagen confirmed the rare discovery with genetic and scientific evidence. It is located in the Kukës region and is in a wild state.
The genetic analyzes of this tulip were carried out by Prof. Sonja Siljak-Yakovlev of the Department of Ecology at the University of Paris.
"It grows only in Albania. In no other country. It has caused a sensation all over the world. A new plant must pass several filters to be registered in the international plant registration database. This one came in the first week.
There were many things that set it apart and left no room for doubt as to whether or not it was a fake," said Professor Shuka to the media regarding the discovery of the rare Albanian tulip. Around 113 types of tulips were known in the world until now, while the Kukës tulip ranks 114th. The Albanian tulip is named as such because it grows only near the village of Surroj in Kukës and is a new species endemic to Albania.
Tulipa Albanica can be planted or cultivated based on the climate it suits. From the time of its discovery until today, it has been planted and continues to live not only in the Kukës area but also in the Botanical Garden of Copenhagen in Denmark, where all the rare plants in the world are located.
