Indictment against three people for war crimes in Kosovo

The Kosovo Special Prosecution Office announced that it has filed an indictment against three defendants for war crimes against the civilian population.
The defendants, according to the Prosecution, are RV and MV, of Serbian nationality, and A.Ç, of Bosniak nationality, who are accused of having participated in the murder of 14 Albanian civilians in the Municipality of Peja.
"Investigations have established that the defendants, as reserve members of the Police of the Peja police station, in complicity with members of the Serbian police forces, during the war in Kosovo, in the village of Ozdrim, Peja Municipality and in the villages surrounding the Peja region, committed murder, expulsion, destruction of property and mistreatment of the Albanian civilian population who were not involved in the war, in which case 14 civilians of Albanian nationality were killed," the statement said.
The prosecution said it has proposed that the trial against the three defendants be held in absentia, as they are on the run.
According to the laws in Kosovo, a trial in absentia can only take place provided that the prosecution and the court have exhausted all means to ensure the presence of the accused.
On December 26 of last year, the Basic Court in Pristina sentenced Çedomir Aksiq to 15 years in prison, on charges of war crimes against the civilian population, committed from January to May 1999 in the territory of the municipality of Shtime, respectively in the villages of Reçak, Malopolc and Petrovë.
This is the first war crimes verdict made in absentia, based on the amended Criminal Procedure Code of 2022./ REL
