"Eliot Engel remains a hero in Kosovo", US Congressman Keith Self: Pristina, key to stability in the Western Balkans

US Congressman Keith Self has praised the historic role of the late former Congressman Eliot Engel in supporting Kosovo, calling him "still a hero in Kosovo".
During a discussion in the US Congress, Self said it is ironic that many politicians praise Engel's efforts for Kosovo's independence, while, according to him, they do not show the same commitment to supporting Kosovo today in its role in the Western Balkans.
"Eliot Engel is still a hero in Kosovo. It is ironic that his efforts for Kosovo's independence and the importance it has today are being appreciated, while we just discussed a bill where my colleagues on the other side were not willing to further support Kosovo in its efforts to become a pillar of stability in the Western Balkans," he declared.
Self also supported the initiative to name a building after Eliot Engel, calling it a well-deserved tribute to the former US congressman, known for his continued support for Albanians and Kosovo.
However, the congressman added that Engel, if he were present today, would seek more concrete commitment to Kosovo's advancement in the region.
"I believe that if Mr. Engel were here today, he would want us to go further, because he understood the importance of Kosovo in the Western Balkans. Maybe he would even change the name of the building just to further Kosovo's role as a pillar of stability in the region," Self said.
