The race for the leadership of the DP has sparked numerous debates in recent days, with candidacies against current leader Sali Berisha not being accepted. Mereme Sela and Vladimir Mulaj were disqualified from the race, while a day earlier former DP MP Ervin Salianji, FRPD vice-president Alesia Balliu and former member of the Re-establishment Commission Evi Kokalari were also not allowed to run.
The Director of the Communications Office of the Democratic Party, Alfred Lela, has stated that the reconfirmation of the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, will take place on May 23rd.
Invited to the show "This Week", hosted by author and moderator Nisida Tufa, Lela stated that the process was transparent, while two candidacies were rejected for reasons related to the Statute.
"On May 23, there was a reconfirmation of the DP chairman, Mr. Sali Berisha. The competition process was open and transparent, as you have seen. Two candidacies were rejected by the DP Election Commission, for reasons related to the Statute, because their profile, that of a lady and a gentleman, does not meet, let's say, the criterion of a high political profile to be in the race for chairman of the Democratic Party. I think that both the document and the process were in the eyes of the cameras and consequently in the eyes of public opinion. There was nothing to hide, everything was transparent and clear," he said.
Nisida Tufa: There has been a lot of noise these hours about the name of another doctor who aimed for the position of the head of the Democratic Party, but who was among the disqualified names. What did her persona say to you, or the name that was selected and we see it in the photo? There was a lot of prejudice against her, but anyway, what would a competition between this lady and Mr. Berisha be like?
Alfred Lela : We cannot know for a reason, once again, the lady is a member of the Democratic Party, she meets this criterion, but she does not meet some of the other criteria, the two most important ones: a high political and public profile, which the lady does not have. So, it could be, I am sure that she is known in the medical community and in the community where she lives, but she is not publicly known, so, it is not a name, a profile that means something to Albania. And let's accept that the two major parties, the Democratic Party, which is one of the two largest parties in the country, deserves someone known with extensive public activity.
So, it is not that there is any trick here. I think we should agree on this. It cannot be an unknown or unknown candidate for party leader, as this would undermine the race more than allowing a race to take place, because then the race would be false and incomplete.
