There is an old mentality in Albanian politics, an enverist reflex that is revived every time someone appears who cannot be controlled. This logic, sometimes painted with leftist paint and sometimes with rightist paint, essentially remains the same: it functions like the former State Security, which does not need evidence, but mud; not facts, but words; not truth, but suspicions. In Albania, suspicion is the cheapest, most primitive and most used weapon for 35 years.
For months, a witch hunt has been going on over Joni Keta, the elected head of the BKH. A silent, coordinated, slow but steady campaign. A campaign that has not produced any facts, because there is really no fact about his professional career where Joni has been wrong. So what do they do? They dig into the surname. They dig into the origin. They look for a sin of the parents, an imagined shadow, a fabricated slip. They resemble mud archaeologists who are not looking for history, but moral ruins.
They have dug into his father, but professionally they have not found any violation, any flaw. Despite the good name of the Keta family in Tirana, they have not spared anyone. They have dealt with his mother, Majlinda Keta, because she was a former SP functionary, but they do not say a word about the thousands of students she has educated, about her professionalism, calmness, citizenship and dedication. I know her as a former student: she has left her mark on dozens of young people who are professionals today. But these are not valid in the media gossip market because only mud and doubt are sold there, this thing is clicked and becomes news.
When they can't find a professional flaw, they invent morals. When they can't find a mistake, they create a narrative. When they can't control the boy, they attack the family. A primitive strategy, but still functional for those who think with the logic of the former Labor Party committees.
The truth is much simpler: this witch hunt over Joni Keta stems from fear. The fear that BKH, under his leadership, could become truly independent. The fear that an efficient structure will give SPAK the power it needs. The fear that the blows against corruption will be stronger, faster, more uncontrollable. The fear that a man without secret alliances, without political debts and without a file, is dangerous for the old system of compromise and clientelism. The fear that Joni was supported by the Americans and this scares some more than the law itself.
When they can't grasp the profession, they attack the biography.
When they can't grasp the integrity, they attack the origin.
When they can't grasp the person, they invent shadows and rumors.
The case of Joni Keta clearly shows a bitter truth of this country: Independent people do not fight because they are at fault, but because they cannot control them.
