Supreme Court "rotting" in Veliaj prison? Klodiana Lala tells what happened in the Deliberation Chamber

The Supreme Court decided today to reject the appeal of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj to change the security measure.
Veliaj's appeal was filed on May 6 and is unrelated to the decision issued two days earlier by the Constitutional Court, which returned Veliaj's request to the Supreme Court for reconsideration.
Commenting on today's decision of the Supreme Court, journalist Klodiana Lala stated on the show "The Unexposed" on MCN TV that there was a debate during today's session that lasted about 2 hours and the Criminal Panel found it reasonable to leave the Appeals decision in force.
"The Supreme Court considered a recourse by Mr. Veliaj and not the first measure. The debate lasted about two hours. There were no parties, it was a recourse considered in the consultation room.
There was a short debate. We have seen cases where politicians' issues or other cases were considered, which could have lasted 5-6 hours.
The Criminal Panel has deemed it reasonable to uphold the Appeals decision.
In parallel, several issues regarding Veliaj are being reviewed.
The Constitutional Court annulled the Supreme Court's decision and requested justification for two points, why the arrest measure was the only proportionate measure for Veliaj in his capacity as mayor.
The Constitutional Court says that what is related to the function must be justified by the Supreme Court.
The second point related to the placement of Mr. Veliaj in the glass cage. The Constitutional Court found that the Supreme Court had not provided detailed reasoning as to why a high-ranking official was placed in an equal position with dangerous people from the underworld.
The problem is that today's decision is eagerly awaited.
The joint panels of the Supreme Court made a unifying decision and said that courts must justify why other measures are inappropriate and saw imprisonment as an exceptional case.
SPAK in its reasoning, the point it stops at is, the prosecutors say in the Veliaj 1 file, we have a collaborator of justice and he has not given testimony before the court and has no evidentiary value, there is a risk, due to financial and political power and Veliaj returns to the Municipality, he could put the protected witness at risk.
The second point they justify is related to the Veliaj 2 file, as there is another faction about Veliaj's activity in the Municipality and his brother's Google company. Prosecutors say we still have materials to obtain, witnesses to question. However, in the wake of the changes, this decision is normally interesting to watch.
"The Criminal Court has left a path for Veliaj for a lighter measure, perhaps in 2-3 months," said Lala.
