The Supreme Court will decide today on the fate of Erion Veliaj, in prison or on

The arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, will appear in court today (Tuesday, July 8) where it will be decided whether he will remain in custody or be released.

Veliaj will face the Supreme Court panel, where he is seeking release from prison. Veliaj's fate will be decided by a panel of judges composed of Medi Bici and Sokol Binaj, while Albana Boksi has been appointed rapporteur for the case. The trio of judges will have to "weigh" on the scales of justice which arguments are in accordance with the law, those of Veliaj, or those of the prosecutors of the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime.

The latter will again request the mayor's detention, at least until the investigation is completed, while Veliaj will again request his conditional release, even if under 'house arrest'.

Similar requests have been made so far by all those arrested by SPAK order, but only in the case of Malltez, has he gained freedom.

The first was Berisha who was placed under "house arrest" due to his age, while his son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi, was placed in a cell. But within a short time he gained freedom and was also placed under house arrest, until today it was determined that he can leave the apartment in exchange for a property guarantee.

However, their case is different, as for the "Partizani" file, SPAK has closed the investigations and the case has been accepted for trial in the Special Court. While both Veliaj and the president of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, are still being investigated. But unlike the other investigated, Veliaj could lose a lot, he could lose his position as head of the Municipality of Tirana.

A few days ago, in a meeting with deputies and leaders of Tirana Municipality institutions, Prime Minister Edi Rama also touched on the possibility of early elections in the Tirana municipality.

"It is not known how this will go," Rama is quoted as saying. Therefore, this question raised by Rama about whether or not to hold partial elections in the Municipality of Tirana, seems to be awaiting an "answer" from the decision that the Supreme Court will take tomorrow.

Erion Veliaj was arrested on February 10 of this year. Since that day, Veliaj has been held in custody at the request of SPAK, as he is charged with several criminal offenses. SPAK accuses Veliaj of having created a scheme with his wife to receive bribes for personal enrichment through a number of 'NGO' organizations.
