Requests release from cell/ Hearing for Veliaj continues for about 2 hours
At 12:00, the body of the Criminal College of the Supreme Court, with Judge Albana Boksi as rapporteur, gathered to hear the arguments, part of the appeal of the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, his wife Ajola Xoxa and 6 businessmen, against the security measures imposed by the Court of Appeal against Corruption and Organized Crime.
Veliaj and his wife, Ajola Xoxa, are accused by SPAK of building a corruption and money laundering scheme to illegally benefit from the capital's municipality funds and bribes from its businessmen contractors, using a network of companies and non-profit organizations.
According to SPAK, the mayor of the capital and his wife have benefited from around 1 million euros from this corrupt scheme.
In addition to the mayor and his wife, the GJKKO has imposed the measure of "house arrest" on businessman Elman Abule and the measure of "compulsory appearance" on five other businessmen, including Gentian Sula, Shkëlqim Fusha and Fatmir Bektashi, whose companies are beneficiaries of municipal funds or construction permits in Tirana.
