On the 35th anniversary of the Socialist Party, Rama "washes his hands" of Veliaj: We do not demand his release

Prime Minister Edi Rama declared that the Socialist Party will not demand the release of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, despite considering his situation unfair.

During his speech at the 35th anniversary of the Socialist Party of Tirana, Rama said that the socialists will not follow the path of pressure on justice and brought up former Prime Minister Fatos Nano as an example, who, according to him, faced prison without violating institutions.

"Today we are not like the others. Precisely because we are not like any of the others, we do not demand the release of the political prisoner, Erion Veliaj, because this is not our issue. There are no political prisoners in Albania and no matter how painful his absence is, no matter how unfair it may seem to us, we have a greater duty," Rama said.

The head of government recalled the case of Fatos Nano, emphasizing that he "faced prison and came out with his hand outstretched to the one who imprisoned him," without inciting clashes or political destabilization.

"Today we are not like the others. Precisely because we are not like any of the others, we do not demand the release of the political prisoner, Erion Veliaj, because this is not our issue."

Because there are no political prisoners in Albania and because no matter how painful his absence is, no matter how unfair it may seem to us, precisely because we are here to make history and leave our children a different Albania, we have only one extremely difficult task.

The task that Fatos Nano performed best, not only by breaking out of prison and coming out with his hand outstretched towards his captor and facing other humiliations, but without ever letting go... without ever opening the gates to the socialists' sea to overthrow Albania from the beginning.

But by creating the conditions that step by step lead us to where we are."
