Iraq/ Two American soldiers and one British soldier die during training

An American soldier and a British colleague were killed during a joint training exercise in Iraq, military authorities from both countries said.

The accident occurred on Sunday at an air base in Erbil, in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, where the United States maintains a military presence.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the British Ministry of Defense confirmed the deaths but did not provide further details about the circumstances of the incident.

"The exercise was conducted in cooperation with our British Army partners, who also lost a soldier. The incident is under investigation," US officials said in a statement to the military newspaper Stars and Stripes.

The US military said the soldier's name will not be released for 24 hours, in accordance with protocol for notifying next of kin.

For its part, the British Ministry of Defense confirmed "with deep sadness" the death of a British soldier in an accident during training in northern Iraq.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time," the statement said.

The United States has gradually reduced the number of troops deployed in Iraq to fight ISIS, but still maintains forces in the Kurdish region as it seeks to strengthen relations with its Kurdish allies.

The deaths of the two soldiers came almost a month after two other American soldiers in Morocco died when they fell off a cliff while climbing off-duty.

The two soldiers were reported missing on May 2 after taking part in Exercise African Lion, the largest multinational military exercise held annually in Africa.
