Tabaku: There is no EU integration with journalists being tried for their

Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku has requested in Parliament the repeal of Articles 119 and 120 of the Criminal Code, arguing that defamation and insult should not be treated as criminal offenses.

According to her, the criminal law is being used as a tool of political pressure on the media and journalists, while the situation of freedom of expression in Albania is deteriorating significantly.

"There is no European integration with journalists who sit in courts for their writings... The first pillar is freedom, we demand the repeal of articles 119 and 120 of the Criminal Code, defamation and insult cannot be criminal offenses,"  she said.

She stressed that in 2024 alone, 45 serious incidents against journalists were recorded, with a large proportion of them affecting female journalists. According to her, this indicates a serious deterioration of the climate for the media and democracy in the country.

" We have proposed a change to toughen articles 237 and 287. Anyone who touches a journalist should be punished equally, the journalist is a public servant. This amendment has absolutely nothing political. This is a law that should unite this parliament ," she said.
