Denmark's message to the US: "Yes" to dialogue, "No" to

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said today that her country will do everything to reach an agreement with the United States over Greenland, short of handing over the island.

Asked about the possibility of Greenland being given to the US, Frederiksen said it was unacceptable and unimaginable. "No, no one can imagine it," she said in an interview with the "Maischberger" show on German public broadcaster ARD.

The statement follows US President Donald Trump's insistence last week that the US should own the large Arctic island, an autonomous territory of Denmark. Trump also ruled out taking the island by force, adding that his talks in Davos with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had created a "framework" for a future deal. Trump also withdrew his threat to impose tariffs on European countries that opposed his plans for Greenland.

Prime Minister Frederiksen stressed that talks with the US are a diplomatic approach and that the outcome depends on cooperation with European partners. “When Europe is united and speaks with one voice, there is an outcome,” Frederiksen said, adding that it is still unclear how long the negotiations might take.

Essentially, Frederiksen refused to provide details on the content of the talks and underlined the importance of maintaining Danish sovereignty over Greenland.
