Miley Cyrus explains the medical reason that prevents her from touring

Miley Cyrus once again referred to Reinke's edema in a new interview, a condition that gives her characteristic, harsh timbre of voice.

But at the same time, it's a barrier to touring as much as she'd like. Speaking on Apple Music's "The Zane Lowe Show," the 32-year-old singer explained that she has a very large polyp on her vocal cords, which is an abnormal growth of tissue.

“It’s part of my unique anatomy,” she said. “It’s given me a lot of the tone and structure that has made me who I am, but it’s incredibly difficult to sing with it, because it’s like running a marathon with weights on your ankles.” Cyrus admitted that her lifestyle when she was 21 — with late nights, alcohol, smoking and after-concert parties — didn’t help her condition. “My voice always sounded like that,” she said.

She said that when she's exhausted, her mother often comments that her voice sounds like she's "talking on the radio." "It creates this absolute 'vocal distress,' and so, I live with this blessing of the condition," Cyrus said, choosing to look on the bright side. "My voice is incredibly unique because of it."

The singer also revealed that she doesn't plan to have the polyp surgically removed, as she doesn't want to risk losing her voice. Rather than undergo surgery, the Grammy-winning artist prefers to cut back on live performances to avoid straining her vocal cords.

As she explained, if she were to do a world tour, it would have to be done “in a sustainable way” for her, as she doesn’t do music reproductions and live performances are tiring. She even added that if she doesn’t play a certain number of concerts, then it’s “mathematically not possible” to tour, because she won’t be able to cover the costs for staff and other concert needs.
