The death of Hollywood star Val Kilmer at the age of 65 has shocked his fans around the world.
Many fans remember him as the most eligible bachelor of the 80s. Kilmer dated some of the most famous women in the world, wooing Cindy Crawford, Angelina Jolie and Daryl Hannah, but he only married once in his life, to Joanne Whalley.
"I've always found women infinitely more interesting than men. Maybe that's why I've always gotten along," Kilmer wrote in his 2020 memoir.
So powerful was his charisma that singer Cher even admitted to having a relationship with the actor. Their relationship failed, as the age difference between them was 13 years, at the time Kilmer was only 21 years old.
'Batman' star Kilmer, who was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, spent his final years alone.
Cher has dated some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Tom Cruise, Warren Beatty and Gene Simmons. But last November, during an appearance on Howard Stern's SiriusXM, she admitted that Val was one of the few who had broken her heart.
Cher admitted that their age difference had affected the relationship, admitting that Val was 'really young'.
The pair dated from 1982 to 1984, when Cher was 36 and Val was 23.
In 1984, Val's career was at its peak, as he would star in Top Gun in 1986.
After being diagnosed with throat cancer, Cher offered support to her ex-boyfriend.
After receiving the news that Val had passed away, she wrote, "Val, we will miss you, crazy, funny, my great friend. You were my ally in the fight against the disease."
Shortly after his whirlwind romance with Cher ended, Val turned his attention to Michelle Pfeiffer. The 66-year-old American actress met Val in the 1980s.
He said he had always felt comfortable talking to Michelle and was able to open up to her about his parents, with whom he had a strained relationship.
On the other hand, Michelle was able to trust Val with the inner workings of her difficult marriage to Peter Horton, from whom she later divorced.
Among his high-profile friends was the American actress Ellen Barkin – although much less has been published about their relationship. “I remember her wit, her fiery eyes, but mostly her laugh,” he recalled in his memoir.
Narrating their brief romance, he writes: 'Her hair. Who remembers the softness of a woman's hair?'
With Ellen, their romance was as strange as it was whirlwind, the actor emphasizes.
It was at the premiere of Top Gun in New York in 1986 that Val met American singer-songwriter Carly Simon at a party.
A week later, he would visit her at her Upper West Side home. “We talked about shyness. We talked about Harry Nilsson. We talked about Bob Dylan and the evils of journalism and Frank Sinatra quotes. We talked and had dinner.”
Joanne was married to Kilmer from 1988 to 1996 – the only woman he ever married. Together they had two children – Mercedes, 33, and Jack, 29.
The couple first met on the set of Willow, but their marriage was troubled by "constant rumors" about his on-set romances. They fell in love and married in New Mexico and honeymooned on Marlon Brando's island in Tahiti. They promised to be together forever, but that promise began to fade due to their careers.
Despite this, he managed to stay close to his children after the divorce.
Kilmer learned of the divorce from the media. The divorce was extremely expensive, with Kilmer calling it the "second most expensive in New Mexico" and came just "two months after the birth of their second child."
After divorcing Joanne Whalley in 1996, Val was obviously looking for a shoulder to cry on. And there was Cindy Crawford, who went on to date the actor for two years.
Val was then linked to producer Jaycee Gossett between 1988 and 2000, although little is known about their relationship.
After the breakup, he got involved with Daryl Hannah, which he says was the "most painful breakup of all," even though they never married.
In his 2020 memoir, Kilmer admitted to being a 'love slave' and recalled hooking up with some of the world's most famous women, including Angelina Jolie. Val wrote how he 'couldn't wait to kiss her' when they were on set together, saying he also wanted to 'buy her a plane and draw V+J in the sky.'
