Today is a day of silence in the United States. Americans commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks today, with ceremonies in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
On September 11, 2001, four planes hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists were used to strike the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, while the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control.
In total, 2,977 people lost their lives in the attacks, including 441 emergency service members in New York.
The main ceremony will take place at the September 11 Memorial in New York, where the names of the victims will be read and seven moments of silence will be observed. In Pennsylvania, the 40 passengers and crew members of Flight 93 will be honored, while another memorial ceremony will be held at the Pentagon, where President Donald Trump is expected to attend.
In New York, the "Tribute in Light" installation will illuminate the sky from dusk to dawn, symbolically recreating the silhouette of the Twin Towers.
The September 11 attacks, along with the ensuing war on terrorism, changed American and international security, intelligence, and foreign policy policies for decades.
A quarter of a century later, the United States and the world remember the victims of September 11 and the consequences of one of the worst terrorist attacks in modern history.
