The "small flower" and the big problem of Rama and Berisha!

By Ermal Peçi

Within two weeks, two of the most well-known political journalists of these 36 years, Rudina Xhunga and Blendi Fevziu, were confronted in interviews with two of the most powerful people in the Albanian hybrid democracy: Edi Rama and Sali Berisha.

In fact, if you follow both interviews carefully, Rama and Berisha, at some points, resemble each other like two drops of water. Both play with half-truths and both say they do not want power, while doing their best to hold on to it. Half-truths are perhaps the most sophisticated form of lying in today's time, because they do not require you to invent reality, but only to cut it in half and show the public the part that interests you.

Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “There are no facts, only interpretations.” In Albanian politics, Rama and Berisha seem to have taken this idea even further: The facts exist, but each person chooses only the parts they need to construct their own truth.

But, besides this phenomenon, Rama and Berisha are united not only by the troubles they have in SPAK, but also by something else: Attacking Lulzim Basha every time they get the chance!

Each in their own register and each relying on what we can call the “Power of Rumors”, they choose to attack him. One tries to diminish him, to infantilize him politically, calling him “my Luli”. The other tries to present him as a man of bargains, “sold out” or “taken hostage”. Two different languages, two camps that publicly claim that an abyss separates them, but that surprisingly meet when the target is called Lulzim Basha.

All this mudslinging against Basha, even though he has long since ceased to be as active in politics as he once was, at first glance seems pointless.

But there is a reason. Basha, despite Rama calling him "my Luli" and Berisha "sold out" or "taken hostage," hit them exactly where it hurt the most: The system.

He exposed them naked in front of Albanians, raising the very question that Albanian politics has been trying to cover up with noise for years: How is it possible that during the day Rama and Berisha insult each other, mention family members, make the most serious accusations and build the image of two irreconcilable enemies, while at night, they share economic interests, construction permits and tenders?!

On stage, enemies. Behind the scenes, friends, and this is precisely what Rama and Berisha do not forgive Basha for, because for them this clash had both personal and political costs.

That "little flower" of Rama, almost unnoticed, became a cause for shaking some of the powerful people close to power, people whose interests, in certain cases, intersected with businessmen or oligarchs close to Berisha's camp.

Njëri përpiqet ta zvogëlojë me “Luli im”.

Perhaps Basha's battle is between the first two phases. Time in politics has shown that leaving the stage is not always the end. Sometimes it is just silence before the moment when facts begin to speak louder than people.

If tomorrow the threads that seem disconnected today are reunited, if justice continues to open doors that politics kept closed, and if Albanians see more clearly the system that Basha denounced, then the greatest irony for Rama and Berisha could happen:

The "little flower" that one mocked and the "sellout" that the other cursed, may turn out to be the man who warned them both of what was coming: A confrontation with justice.

Therefore, power can control the present, propaganda can obscure the truth for a while, but no one has a contract with the future, and the future usually comes without asking for permission.

Po ndodh...
